| 4 | | GeoCluster— A Technical View |
Since 2000, Double-Take Software has provided a data protection solution for geographically separated Microsoft cluster nodes with our GeoCluster® offering. This fall, we released GeoCluster 4.5 and introduced new features to enhance the level of protection GeoCluster provides for Microsoft Cluster Services (MSCS); these new features also provide additional flexibility and reliability. Below, we provide technical highlights for two of the most important new product features. Replaces Governor Resource with Status Resource The newest version of GeoCluster uses a status resource instead of the governor resources. The status resource is created only once when the first (GRD) is created in the resource group and remains until the last GRD is removed from the group. Each resource group has only one status resource regardless of the number of GRDs in the group. The purpose of the status resource is the same as the governor resources, to help prevent unintended failover of resource groups between nodes when data is in a bad state. Using a single status resource that is static rather than creating and deleting multiple governor resources increases the overall stability of the cluster by decreasing the chance that a resource group can be moved when a mirror has not completed.
