1 | Product News: Protect VMware® ESX Server with Double-Take® for VMware Infrastructure

Virtualization technologies like VMware ESX Server give you the ability to run multiple virtualized operating systems on one physical server - saving money, improving IT efficiency and optimizing resources. But it also means that all of your virtual eggs are in one physical basket. In a disaster, would you be able to get to the critical information stored on these systems? How much time would it take to provision new servers with identical applications, and how much more time would it take to restore business-critical data? But how do you protect production virtual machines without breaking your budget?

Double-Take for VMware Infrastructure runs on a single Windows® server in a virtualized environment, and allows administrators to easily manage and monitor multiple virtual machine protection jobs from any Windows desktop. Double-Take for VMware Infrastructure captures changes regularly, keeping the target virtual disks up-to-date and ready for failover, recovery and backup at any time. During an outage, the replicated virtual machine can be started on the target server with the latest replicated data available.

Double-Take for VMware Infrastructure greatly reduces downtime and data loss in a virtual environment, making it an ideal component to disaster recovery and business continuity plans. It is also designed to serve as an integral part of a comprehensive storage solution. It will support replication between any type of storage supported by the VMware ESX Server including direct attached SCSI or Fiber Channel SANs, as well as iSCSI and NAS storage, which are supported in the latest versions of VMware ESX Server. Double-Take for VMware Infrastructure is compatible with VMware ESX Server versions 3.0 and later, and VirtualCenter version 2.0 or later.

The Big Picture in Disaster Recovery - Tying Together Virtualization, Replication and WAN Acceleration for Better Business Continuity

Enterprises are barraged by different technologies that help solve their disaster recovery challenges, such as virtualization, data replication, and WAN acceleration.  Because these technologies span a variety of IT segments (i.e. servers, storage, and network infrastructure), they might appear to be disjointed on the surface.  However, they are quite complimentary to one another, and can easily be combined to create an effective end-to-end disaster recovery solution.

In this discussion, industry experts from VMware, Double-Take Software, and Silver Peak discuss how to “put the pieces together” for an effective disaster recovery plan.  They discuss new trends in data protection technology that span all areas of IT, citing specific examples of how real-world customers have put combined DR solutions into practice for improved business continuity.

3 | Double-Take® Tech Tip: Getting Acquainted with Target State Awareness

With the release of Double-Take 4.5, Double-Take Software introduced Target State Awareness. Target State Awareness is a new way to monitor the health of the target server data. This information is now part of the connection statistics displayed in the Double-Take Management Console and let’s you know quickly if target data is in a consistent usable state. Below is a list of the possible states for the target data:

  • OK - The data on the target is in a good state.
  • Mirroring - The target is in the middle of a mirror process. The data will not be in a good state until the mirror is complete.
  • Mirror required - The data on the target is not in a good state because a re-mirror is required. This may be caused by an incomplete or stopped mirror or by a dropped operation on the target.
  • Restore required - The data on the source and target do not match because of a failover condition. Restore the data from the target back to the source. If you want to discard the changes on the target, you can re-mirror to resynchronize the source and target.
  • Snapshot reverted - The data on the source and target do not match because a snapshot has been applied on the target. Restore the data from the target back to the source. If you want to discard the changes on the target, you can re-mirror to resynchronize the source and target.

Under normal circumstances, your target data is in the “OK” state, indicating that target data is consistent with source data and that failover or snapshots can occur. If the target data is in the “mirroring” or “mirror required” state, you must complete a mirror before the target data is consistent with the source data. No failover, restore or snapshots should occur in either of these states. Both the “restore required” and “snapshot reverted” states indicate that the data on the target is not consistent with the source data and that the target data may need to be restored to the source.

Target State Awareness will allow you to understand the health of your target data, and to determine when and if you can schedule or manually take snapshots. It will also help you to identify whether target data is consistent when failover occurs, or whether you should revert to the last good snapshot. Target State Awareness is just one additional way to help you, the administrator, best protect and use your data.

4 | White Paper: ESG Analyst Sums Up the Keys to Recoverability

Enterprise Strategy Group analyst Lauren Whitehouse sums up Double-Take Software’s keys to recoverability in this must read white paper:

Risk is defined as the probability or chance of loss. Everyday, people think about their assets — health, job, property, finances, etc. — and what the potential is for any negative effect on those assets. Security conscious individuals mitigate risk with insurance or preventative measures.

Similarly, businesses today have to be responsive and resilient when it comes to risk. Identification and management of strategic and operational risks and compliance issues are important for safeguarding an organization. At the heart of the assets requiring protection from risk are the business-critical data and applications, as well as the infrastructure where the data and applications reside.

IT departments design the organization’s infrastructure with continuity of business operations in mind. However, most organizations aren’t doing enough to protect mission-critical data, applications and systems from unexpected disruption and potential loss — volatilities, such as viruses, power outages, natural disasters, corruption, human error and media failures can’t always be prevented. Business environments today are characterized by rapid data growth, complexity, stringent business requirements and, oftentimes, government regulations, making it difficult for IT to get their arms around their data protection strategies. In many cases, the focus is on just protecting data — not necessarily on recovering it.

6 | Double-Take Software Launches Partnership with Olympian Jeret "Speedy" Peterson

In the sport of aerial skiing, where multiple spins, twists and somersaults has become commonplace, success or failure is measured in seconds. In the world of business, where backing up business critical servers has become complex, success or failure is measured in minutes. In both, simplicity and elegance reign supreme.

For that reason, Double-Take Software is proud to sponsor Two-Time Freestyle Skiing Olympian & 2005 Aerials World Cup Title Champion Jeret "Speedy" Peterson. While Peterson continues to make complex moves look simple in the sport of freestyle aerials, Double-Take Software continues to keep data protection and recovery easy and affordable.

Many of our partners incorporate Double-Take into a joint marketing solution and invest the time marketing the value of the combined solution of the products. But, we have seen a large increase in the number of companies that depend on Double-Take as their main source of fault tolerance and availability of their core applications. Any way you slice it, more and more companies are choosing to work with Double-Take Software to provide additional protection and recovery options in the Windows environment.

Our solutions are organized into the following categories:
